The International Institute of Waste Management (IIWM) organized a five day short term certificate course on “Industrial Solid Waste Management” from 24th July to 28th July 2017 at Bengaluru, Karnataka. The overall objective of the course was to create awareness among the industry personnel working in the field of environment management, to provide hands- on learning experience, to obtain technical ‘know-how’ on the best fit technologies/practices for handling waste and on compliance with respect to environmental laws, to provide interaction/networking opportunities with the sector experts to better understand the management system. A total number of 12 apprentices attended the course.

The subjects covered Hazardous waste management, E-waste management and Non-Hazardous waste management, overall framework of the revised Waste Management Rules in India and Coprocessing of Hazardous Waste, basics of E-waste Management that included the E-waste segments, formal and informal E-waste processing, Recycling Technologies of E-waste, Legal Framework on Hazardous Waste Management, On-site and Off-site pre-treatment requirements, Legal Framework on E-waste Management and Industrial Disaster – Prevention, Emergency Preparedness and Planning.

The course had an interactive approach with a blend of lectures, group exercises and exchange of experiences. The apprentices were taken on field visits to M/s. Century Refineries, Hoskote, Bangalore Rural, M/s. TSDF, Dabbaspete and M/s. E-Parisara Pvt. Ltd., Dabbaspete to get a practical exposure. The apprentices were given an opportunity to interact with sector experts and other industries to gain more insights on the related topics and also share best practices.
