The IIWM is implementing the ‘Green Wicket’ project in association with German International Development Cooperation (GIZ) India. 'Green Wicket' is a project conceived by the GIZ-India, an Indo-German Bilateral Development Agency and Govt. of Karnataka in the year 2013. The objective of this project was to promote environmental awareness to general public through the game of cricket, cricketers as ambassadors and cricket stadiums as demonstration units to showcase eco infrastructure. The successful pilot project was executed in Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The concepts of water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management and sanitation were the focus themes of this pilot project. As part of this project rainwater harvesting, solar rooftop PV, biogas plant for canteen food waste and sewage treatment and recycling were implemented in the stadium. This example was then used to disseminate the information to educational institution campuses and their students on the themes.

This project is now being replicated to other stadia across India, as per the request of the Government of India and NITI Ayog. In the first phase of replication, the project is being replicated in 4 major stadia in India with the support of the respective state Cricket Associations.
